(BK-0151) DICTIONARY OF NAUTICAL WORDS AND TERMS. Layton, C. W. & Clissold, P. 1987. ISBN 0-85174-536-9. Compiled to embody the words and terms that are, or have been, used by seamen in connection with their work, it deals with navigation, seamanship, rigging, meteorology, astronomy, naval architecture, average, ship economics, hydrography, cargo stowage, marine engineering, ice terminology, buoyage and other nautical matters. The number of entries approaches 8,000. The scope of the book has been extended through a wide a range of subjects ancillary to nautical to help and interest the professional mariner and the enquiring layman.

In this book nautical terms and words are arranged in alphabetical form and with explanations given as fully as required. The illustrations are a feature and, in most cases, where possible, the nautical term is shown by a drawing. This book is an important reference work. Officers of all nationalities will find it most useful as it explains the English meaning of the lesser known sea terms and is a comprehensive nautical dictionary for seamanship terms.

Collects for the first time the sea terms that have made a place for themselves in shore speech by their pungency, aptness and humor. The author speculates on probable relationships among expressions which go back beyond the delving of etymologists and traces the origins of many terms.

This book is to develop in the nautical students an ability to communicate effectively in their general and specialist subjects in English. This book is not merely to teach grammar, but to demonstrate to the students the use of the English grammar they have acquired in their early education. It should be emphasized that this book is not designed to teach language or subject-matter in isolation, but to combine both in meaningful communication.

Words and terms ranging from the technical to the fanciful, all pertaining to the world of sailors, vessels, and marine life, are arranged and defined with both the salty dog and the landlubber in mind.

This book is primarily designed for deck and engineering officers studying for British certificates of competency, but is useful to anyone professionally engaged in the business of ship management, shipbrokering, or marine insurance. Over 1,400 terms are concisely defined and where necessary, clearly illustrated.

The different terms used in navigation, pilotage, nautical astronomy, meteorology, magnetism, compass, tides, and the navigational branches of mathematics and trigonometry are arranged alphabetically and are exhaustively treated. The various methods and formulae are investigated together with alternative methods that may be or have been used. The information is concise, but is full and complete, and thoroughly up-to-date with all modern developments.

(BK-0652) AS THEY SAY ON THE RIVER: A DICTIONARY OF WESTERN RIVERS TOWING. Ross, J. 1996. 99p. 5_" x 8_". A dictionary of terms and phrases used in the river towing industry, including slang and colorful expressions seldom heard up the hill. These terms are mostly in regular use on the rivers, but many have more than one definition, and some have different meanings in different areas. Some blue-water terminology has been borrowed by rivermen, often with slightly different connotation. Unusual pronunciations have been included where pertinent.

This vocabulary has been compiled to assist in the greater safety of navigation and of the conduct of ships by standardizing the language used in communication for navigation at sea, in port-approaches, in waterways and harbors. It is not intended that use of the vocabulary shall be mandatory, but rather through constant repetition in ships and in training establishments ashore, that the phrases and terms used will become those normally accepted and commonplace among seamen. Use of the contents of the vocabulary should be made as often as possible in preference to other wording of similar meaning.
